According to a report from The Wrap, Universal Studios started off well with their Fast and Furious spin-off film starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, and Idris Elba, scoring a $23.7 million opening on Friday and is now on course to meet a previous $60 million projection.
Despite the fact Hobbs and Shaw didn’t do as well as the last Fast and Furious installment, it’s on track with the latest Mission Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise, Mission Impossible: Fallout.
Paramount released their last Mission Impossible film at the end of the summer last year and it opened with a whopping $61 million, going on to accrue a $220 million domestically and $791 million around the world. It cost only $180 million to produce.
With that said, Hobbs and Shaw had a budget of $200 million dollars and the film will need an overseas boost to make money. Reportedly, movie industry analysts are claiming that the film is up against tough competition in the 18-35 male demographic with Quentin Tarantino’s latest, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.

Sony expects that Tarantino’s film will earn $20 million in its second weekend, which is a decline of 51%. Even with a 50% drop, the movie will perform better than his last flick, The Hateful Eight, which reportedly had a disappointing run at domestic box offices with only $54,000,000.
Previously, the Fast and Furious spin-off film was apparently an issue for members of the Fast and Furious franchise, primarily, Tyrese Gibson. Fans will remember in 2017 when Gibson took Dwayne Johnson to task on social media for supposedly making the series “all about him.”
It later came out that Tyrese was struggling financially on account of exorbitant spending as well as a legal fight with his ex-partner, Norma Gibson. During an appearence on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen last year, Dwayne stayed relatively silent on the matter with the co-host.

In a video you can see above, Dwayne addresses the controversy directly, but without saying a lot. Mr. Johnson stated that he and Tyrese never spoke about the controversy, adding that he never really talked to him about it and the beef was overwhelmingly “one-sided.”
